The Department of Radiation Oncology is currently staffed with nine (11) board-certified Medical Physicists (6 Ph.D.; 5 M.S.) and five (5) board-certified Dosimetrists. The Downtown Nashville location is equipped with four (4) Varian linear accelerators: a Trilogy, Novalis Tx, and two (2) TrueBeams. All accelerators feature kV on-board imaging as well as MV portal imaging. The Novalis Tx system is additionally equipped with BrainLab's ExacTrac image guidance system. A Varian Optical Surface Monitoring System is utilized for DIBH treatments on both TrueBeam systems.
Our three (3) satellite facilities house a total of four (4) Varian linear accelerators (mix of TrueBeam and 21-series machines) and are located within a 50-mile radius of the main facility in Nashville proper. Additional clinical equipment includes: (1) a Phillips 16-slice, 4DCT-capable, large bore CT simulator; (2) a Varian VariSource HDR system (gynecological, intracavitary and interstitial), (3) an Axxent Xoft electronic brachytherapy system for intraoperative APBI, and (4) an intraoperative LDR seed implant program (prostate and eye plaque).
Treatment planning systems include Varian Eclipse, BrainLab iPlan, and Varian BrachyVision / VariSeed. The Department also utilizes MIM Maestro for deformable image registrations and RadCalc as its secondary dose calculation engine. ImageOwl's TotalQA system is utilized for network implementation of equipment quality assurance standardization and trend analysis. Additional web-based, in-house developed dashboards and workflow management are currently being implemented at all VUMC sites. Varian's ARIA suite serves as the Department's record and verify system and VUMC is transitioning to EPIC for electronic medical record management.
Successful candidates will be responsible for leading computationally-intensive clinical development projects and informatics initiatives as well as supporting, advising and complimenting existing Information Technology (IT) team members to implement Radiation Oncology-specific technology systems. They will also lend their expertise to clinical development initiatives and research activities of Radiation Oncology faculty and staff. A portion of their effort will be committed to developing and maintains intradepartmental IT research systems and infrastructure. There are also opportunities to provide didactic instruction for Department educational programs as well as student supervision and research support. The Computational Physicist will report to the Chief and Vice Chair of Physics or their designee.
Qualified applicants will be eligible for faculty appointment in a research or clinician educator track at a level commensurate with research experience and publication record. Predicated on the desired track of faculty appointment, candidates will be afforded resources to facilitate clinically-applicable / translational research within the Department as well as in collaboration with researchers both within the Medical School and across disciplines throughout Vanderbilt University.
