The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide mental health care services under the general supervision of the physician on a psychiatric inpatient unit and in consultation to medical/surgical areas of the hospital. The NP may manage the mental healthcare for those patients for whom he/she has been educated. The NP may interview and diagnose clients and record health histories to include but not limited to psychiatric evaluations, mental status exams, physical and developmental assessments, order appropriate diagnostic tests, diagnose behavioral health problems, manage the mental health care of those clients for which he/she has been educated, provide health teaching and counseling, initiate referrals and maintain health records.
Essential Core Functions:
Mental status examinations
Evaluate, diagnose and treat psychiatric illnesses
Provide appropriate medical support to the treatment teams by maintaining knowledge of medication dosages and indications
