Tennessee Poison Center (TPC) was established in 1988 as a program of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Prior to 2004, Tennessee Poison Center served 57 Tennessee counties in middle, upper east and southeast Tennessee. As of February 1, 2004, Tennessee Poison Center is the only poison control center in Tennessee and serves all residents in 95 counties.
Tennessee Poison Center (TPC) is a comprehensive poison resource center located on the campus of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. We are the statewide poison emergency information and resource center for the public and health care professionals.
Tennessee Poison Center is certified as the statewide poison control center by the Tennessee Department of Health and is certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. This department averages 300 calls a day.
This successful individual will receive calls from hospitals (ER Staff), physicians and other customers regarding drug interactions, poison cases, pts that have overdosed on drugs, pts that are at home with questions and other poison control issues. This individual would take the calls research different drug interactions and follow each case by documenting appropriate information in the Tox system.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Provides accurate information regarding assessment and managing of potential poisoning.
Makes appropriate decisions based on triage, need for toxicologist consultation and treatment recommendations.
Projects confidence, professionalism and politeness with all callers.
Documents all information and exposure calls in Toxicall. Documents an accurate history, symptoms, assessment, and recommendation or plan on all exposure cases. Is able to utilize all office equipment that may be needed to perform job duties.
Participates in research and professional development and education to enhance the services of the TPC.
Participates in guideline development either through writing, updating, or reviewing guidelines.
Licensed Nurse, Pharmacist, or MD, and 2 years of registered nurse, pharmacist, physician assistant experience or the equivalent.
