Copper Hills Youth Center is a 197-bed private residential treatment center for adolescents 12-17 years of age. We counsel, teach and mentor children placed in our care and give each child a chance to make successful changes. We strive to improve lives and help children help themselves. At Copper Hills, we treat boys and girls who have emotional, behavioral and psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. We also specialize in caring for patients with Aspergerâ€™s syndrome. For youth with co-existing substance abuse problems, we offer weekly individualized therapy that focuses on education, recovery and abstinence. Our accredited private school allows students to continue their education while receiving treatment. Â
Provides shift supervision of direct care staff and performs selected non-professional services under the direct supervision of the Milieu Coordinator.Â The job accountabilities include behavioral and crisis management, milieu management, documentation, resident physical needs and the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
Â ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Â ___1. Performs primary oversight of direct care staff.Â Documents daily rounds and findings, ensures unit cleanliness, adherence to programming, and ensuring that searches are completed daily. Tracks daily incidents, identifies trends, and assigns needed documentation, Ensures that all IRs, student debriefings, out of community forms, etc. are completed before leaving shift.Â Participates in contraband and room searches as needed.
____2. Makes shift assignments including coordination of breaks to maintain appropriate supervision of residents and consistency of unit structure. Ensures that staff are using radios and headsets appropriately. Â Assigns mental health associates to provide optimal supervision to residents on one-to-one and other precautions.
Â ____3. Demonstrates thorough program knowledge using handbook guidance and milieu schedules in all interaction with residents and staff.
____4. Ensures compliance to Company policy and procedure through diligent supervision and examination of all unit activity, workflow, attendance and documentation for accuracy and legibility.
____5. Continually assesses the whereabouts of residents and staff on each unit and is capable of assessing units for potential risk and handling emergency situations in conjunction with other Managers.
____6. Demonstrates flexibility, emotional maturity and confidentiality when handling crisis or sensitive issues.Â Can plan shift activities including alternate plans should the schedule need to be altered due to unforeseen circumstances i.e. therapist not available for group, etc.
____7. Â Â Provides emotional support, maintaining a positive and objective attitude and act as role models and advocates for the residents.
____8. Acts as a role model for both residents and staff and helps facilitate problem solving and the use of coping skills.
____9. With the Milieu Coordinator, continuously assesses the overall program to see if there are any changes that need to be made for optimum functioning.
___10. Utilizes effective verbal and written communication skills to address issues and needs in a concise, accurate and considerate manner.Â Promotes the effectiveness of good communication skills to peers.
___11. Participates in maintaining safety of the milieu environment by encouraging unit cleanliness and hazard awareness, identification and removal of contraband, and appropriate response to dangerous situations. Reports all safety concerns immediately to Milieu Coordinator.
___12. Assists with admission process of clients, including introductions to staff and facility, disposition of valuables and orientation to assigned unit and rules.
Â Â Â Â Â 13. Attends staff development training to insure updated material to compete with the changing job market and to meet all facility and regulatory training requirements.
Â Â Â Â Â 14. Maintains a professional, effective working relationship and good rapport with members of all departments and direct care staff, assisting them as necessary to help maintain good employee relations.
___15. Assists Milieu Coordinator with performance evaluations of assigned staff in a timely manner.
___16. Under the direction of the Milieu Coordinator, coaches and mentors line staff, providing on the job training to assist staff in teaching residents the necessary skills to function in the environment.Â Provides oversight and management of the programâ€™s mentoring process, meeting weekly deadlines and providing direct supervision and training to new employees.
___17. Assigns code runners, provides code management, and works to create capable code leaders by training staff in crisis management.
___18. Achieves certification as a verbal de-escalation trainer, participating in training blocks (including new hire orientation) as well as providing ongoing training for program staff. Helps ensure the use of nonviolent behavior interventions and appropriate and effective use of de-escalation techniques with agitated residents.Â Coaches staff to avoid power struggles with residents.Â Advocates for resident rights and treats residents and staff with respect at all times.
___19. Is aware of and maintains unit staffing ratios.Â Assists with finding coverage for open shifts.Â May personally fill open spots as needed. Works with other programs to assure units are staffed and building is appropriately staffed.
___20. Models professionalism, coaching staff as needed. Responsible for creating and executing performance plans and disciplinary action as needed including completing correctives for missed or incomplete training and attendance.
___21. Creates and implements unit schedules and ensures that things are running as planned.
___22. Runs groups on all units weekly and as needed. Provides group materials for staff to run programming.Â Assures that groups are being ran according to schedule.
___23. Attends all RTMs, team meetings, additional trainings, and other meetings when assigned. Provides needed insight about residents upon request.
___24. Facilitates and holds staff accountable to complete HealthStream and any other trainings.
