The Division of Hematology and Oncology conducts research and treats all types of adult cancers including solid tumor cancers and hematological (blood) disorders, as well as coagulation disorders and non-cancerous blood diseases. With over 80 faculty members representing a broad range of professional training and expertise, our dedicated team of professionals is committed to cancer care through
research to better understand and treat cancers;
state-of-the-art patient care and personalized cancer therapy;
clinical trials, including Phase I drug development with subsequent Phase II and Phase III testing;
training future cancer doctors and researchers; and
cancer chemotherapy, pharmacology, and biological therapy with an emphasis on solid tumors.
It is a 27-bed unit. Often the patients are coming from surgery. They may also be admitted for symptom control. It is considered a general care unit for oncology patients. Chemotherapy is administered for the hematology patients. Patient to nurse ratios are 1:3 days and 1:4 nights. The unit shares patients with Myelosuppression (stem cell replacement) from time to time.
Average length of patient stay is 5.7 days but can be 28 days for some.
The nurses will be called to utilize their technical skills as well as emotional due to the nature of the patient illness.
This is a night shift position. The Clinical Staff Leader works two clinical supervisory 12-hour shifts per week (7P to 7A) along with two administrative shifts per week which are typically 8-hour shifts.
The Clinical Staff Leader is a direct supervisory leadership role and a key member of the Nursing Leadership team. The CSL leads a cohort of staff members and actively participates in overall management of the unit, development of clinical practice, and provision of patient care with accountabilities for implementation and outcomes for people leadership, quality, service, compliance, finance, throughput and scheduling. The primary focus of the Clinical Staff Leader is to ensure the unit's optimal performance by engaging in effective problem solving for staff, patients and families and to develop/lead the assigned cohort. The Clinical Staff Leader provides feedback and coaching to
