Position Summary: The Director of Nursing is responsible for the development, organization, provision, and evaluation of all nursing functions within the facility with 24/7 responsibility for those functions. He/she utilizes sound client/resident care standards and recognized nursing standards of practice in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and models of nursing care. Leadership is provided with consideration of the organization as a whole; promoting an atmosphere of respect and encouragement for professional growth for all nursing staff members.The Director of Nursing collaborates with other facility leaders on all matters relevant to the delivery of quality client/resident care services and continually assesses the utilization of the collaborative process among the nursing staff at all levels and other disciplines/departments to ensure organized, comprehensive, efficient, and effective client/resident care.
Nursing Department Leadership
Directs the development, implementation and evaluation of quality nursing client/resident care.
Integrates nursing practice standards, as well as regulatory and accreditation standards into nursing programs, policies, and procedures. Interprets and enforces policies in accordance with the state Nursing Practice Act, state facility regulations, CMS regulations, (CARF) and Joint Commission standards.
Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of nursing trends and new developments in the field of nursing.
Has a vision for nursing services and develops and reviews plans, departmental goals and objectives annually that reflect the values and goals of Arbour and Universal Health Services.
Develops and oversees staff schedule that meets client/resident needs.
Establishes job descriptions and performance standards by which to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of nursing personnel.
Assures that all evaluations for nursing staff are performed timely and appropriately. Assures that supervisory staff is trained to perform performance evaluations.
Utilizes the disciplinary process including written warnings and performance plans consistent with the facility policies.
Establishes systems for advising, distributing, administering, and safeguarding all funds, physical assets and other property assigned to the department.
Develops and implements competency assessment, training and peer review processes in the Nursing Department.
Guides the assessments of educational needs and the development and implementation of in-service education for nursing staff as necessary.
Develops and maintains consistent systems for communication with all nursing staff.
Directs the selection, training and supervision of all staff in the department.
Develops and implements a program for the retention of quality staff in cooperation with the Human Resources Department.
Affiliates with various accredited nursing programs and coordinates nursing student rotations at the facility
Participates in the development of and adherence to the facility's staffing and budget, working closely with the facility's CEO and CFO.
Develops a nursing staffing model and ensures that nursing staffing levels meet the number, mix and acuity of clients/residents on all units/programs.
Provides leadership and accountability for the nursing budget, staffing levels, and FTE management.
Participates with other governance, managerial, medical staff, and other clinical leaders in the decision-making structures and processes of the facility.
Coordinates and collaborates the activities of the Nursing Department with other departments of the organization to ensure high quality of client/resident care is maintained.
Actively participates in multidisciplinary committees related to client/resident care and facility operations.
Provide leadership in readiness for surveys by the Joint Commission, CMS, and DMH/ DEA (State & Federal).
Functions as the Administrator-on-call as needed and takes calls for special facility needs.
Relates with Board members as a participant in the Governing Body.
Participates in the Performance Improvement program to evaluate the quality and appropriateness of client/resident care through departmental monitoring and interdepartmental teams.
Coordinates and monitors the use and performance of clinical contractors such as laboratory and radiology services.
Follows facility and corporate hiring procedures.
Demonstrates organizational skills through effectively managing of workload, completing assignments within specified time frames and delegating as appropriate
Manages information systems by designing, implementing, and retaining essential records and reports.
Works cooperatively with other departments in improving methods and/or procedures that may affect client/resident care directly or indirectly.
Maintains open lines of communication with nursing staff, other leaders, and the medical staff.
Utilizes written and oral communication in a clear, appropriate and timely manner
Implements new initiatives in a timely manner with careful thought and appropriate monitoring of progress
Provides effective supervision of staff through effective coaching, feedback and training.
Participates in the development, review, and revision of facility-wide client/resident care programs and policies and procedures that describe how the nursing care needs of clients/residents are assessed, planned, and addressed.
Collaborates with the Admission/Intake Department to provide clinical advisement regarding the appropriateness of and assignment of admissions, with consideration given to the complexity of the client/resident's needs, competency/ knowledge level of staff members, safety for the treatment population as a whole, infection control, geographical proximity to needed resources.
Collaborates with other clinical leaders regarding program development, program schedules and client/resident/family handbook development.
Ensures that nursing staff adhere to program schedules and maintain appropriate therapeutic environment.
Develops, implements, and monitors client/resident care systems that support the most effective and safe provision of care, including client/resident assignment practices, medication management systems, and medical record documentation systems.
Coordinates and evaluates the effectiveness of treatment planning by nursing staff and ensures staff participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
Completes orientation and competency assessment to provide client/resident care as a staff RN.
Responsible for overseeing departmental safety responsibilities by: ensuring employee safety by reviewing employee accident reports and participating in review of how future accidents can be avoided providing safety training within the department, discussing safety concerns/issues at departmental meetings, and encouraging safe work practices
Pro-actively working with staff to reduce accidents and ensure a safe work environment
Reporting any safety/environmental concerns to the Loss Control Coordinator or member of the EOC committee
Participating as needed, in the facility's Return to Work/Light Duty Program and adhering to all of the physical restrictions.
Ensures that infection control and risk management policies are consistently implemented on all units.
Participates in selection of behavior management program and ensures that all nursing staff receive timely training and retraining.
Implements and monitors compliance with National Patient Safety Goals by nursing staff.
Leads safety initiatives related to client/resident safety, implementing policies, providing training and monitoring results.
Ensures that safety equipment is present on each nursing unit and in working condition.
Demonstrates initiative in promoting customer services, problem-solving, team work, and ensuring continuous quality improvement.
Treats guests, client/residents, physicians, families and other associates with care, courtesy, and respect.
