DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Accurately identify patients, perform phlebotomy and fingerstick procedures to obtain blood for laboratory analysis, properly label and handle specimens in a timely fashion.
Prepare and send out bone marrow specimen to appropriate reference laboratory in accordance with insurance and discharge patient.
Be familiar with specific test requirements. Identify referral testing, prepare appropriate paperwork and package specimen to go out to appropriate reference laboratory.
Decontaminate countertops, laboratory equipment and any surface soiled with blood, body fluids, or any hazardous substance.
Monitor and order phlebotomy supplies when needed.
â�¢ Daily inside contacts with laboratory staff, nurses, research and physician staff office regarding laboratory issues.
â�¢ Daily outside contact with patients to provide laboratory service and to answer laboratory related questions. Daily outside contact with reference laboratories regarding specimen requirements and to obtain laboratory results.
â�¢ Must be capable of handling stress from irregular work load, and extremely ill patients and their families and friends.
â�¢ Must be able to adapt easily, show flexibility and empathy.
â�¢ Must be constantly aware of working environment, surroundings, and the potential exposure risk to infectious waste, chemicals, and toxicants.
â�¢ Must be familiar with and adhere to OSHA standards, company procedures and policies. Universal Safety Precautions must be practiced at all times.
DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES
â�¢ Prioritize jobs in order of importance and complete tasks in a timely fashion.
â�¢ Perform phlebotomy and determine best draw site for proper specimen collection and ultimate patient comfort.
â�¢ Order phlebotomy supplies as needed.
â�¢ Must have and maintain current CA Phlebotomist certification (CPT1)
â�¢ Complies with regulatory requirements (i.e. TJC) appropriate for position.
â�¢ Detail oriented, capable of handling stress from irregular workload and demonstrate businesslike and professional attitude at all times.
â�¢ Two years experience as a Phlebotomist preferred
â�¢ Laboratory experience preferred
