Licensure/Certification: Minimum - Certified thru International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IACHSMM) or Certification for Central Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT).

Supervises activities involved in sterilization, decontamination, supplies and case carts system, ensuring adequate instrument and supplies throughout Bayhealth. Conducts interviews, staff evaluations, and maintains department staffing schedules. Works collaboratively with Materials, Central Supply, Peri-Operative Services, and all procedural clinical areas to ensure that all areas within Bayhealth are utilizing appropriate measures to sterilize and decontaminate all reusable instruments and equipment throughout the Bayhealth system. Under the direction of leadership, is responsible for the development, planning, implementation, and coordination of orientation, continuing education (including Competency Based Education), and cross-training of employees within Central Services. Works with Central Services Management team to evaluate department practice, staff competency, and responsibilities and duties. Ensures proper documentation processes are in place for sterilization methods and performs audits to ensure processes and documentation remain within acceptable ranges as outlined by industry standards and professional organization requirements.
Essential Functions & Accountabilities
Coordinates schedules and assignments for all technicians. Coordinates schedules for and directly supervises new employee orientation. This function includes hands-on training in decontamination and prep/pack areas. Coordinates schedules to accommodate the needs of all parties requiring education on sterilization processes. Meets deadlines and utilizes time effectively for maximum output.
Coordinates all par level supply changes with and supply technicians.
Participates in the interview process for Central Supply Applicants.
Processes all evaluations in a timely manner according to policy, assists in training of new technicians and assures orientation paperwork is completed.
Able to consistently articulate and demonstrate a full understanding and knowledge of current practices and techniques of sterilization disinfection and asepsis in a clinical setting. Remains current in trends and new developments in sterile processing, performance improvement, and materials acquisition/distribution and assists in relating these changes in practice.
Prepares and provides instruction, in-service and competency based educational tools for all new equipment/instrumentation and in regards to cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization processes. Advises staff of any necessary documentation/tracking logs required to validate cleanliness/sterility of all reusable items.
Reviews and monitors all biological, chemical and mechanical documentation, insuring that all equipment is operating within established standards according to manufacturer’s instructions for use and reporting of defects. Insure that the monitoring met all recommended and regulatory standards. Performs audits of all decontamination and sterilization processes and documentation. Reports deficiencies through appropriate channels for follow-up and opportunities for improvement.
Assures purchases and proper scheduling is in accordance with budget restrictions. Remains focused on cost containment measures and opportunities to standardize processes, documentation, etc. to enhance efficiency and reduce opportunity for error.
Documents follow up or action to any complaint or variance request.
Assists in corrective action process for Central Supply personnel.
Assists in the Certification of the Sterile Processing Staff.
Assist Manager in inspections of onsite and offsite areas that perform instrument processing, to insure that the sites are working within established guidelines.
Assists with maintaining departmental policies, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards. Assists in development and implementation of policies and procedures related to processes required to maintain cleanliness/sterility of all reusable items.
Serves as system administrator of the instrument tracking system, responsible for all training and system updates for Bayhealth.
Timekeeper and staff scheduler for Kent campus and reviewer for Milford (Sussex) campus.
Performs managerial duties in absence of the Manager.
Ensures timely response to calls and inquiries. Able to determine and prioritize needs for appropriate contact with clinical resource, vendor, etc.
All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
